The aim of the course is to help students prepare for the speaking and listening components of the EYE (English Yardstick Exam) by helping them become efficient listeners and confident speakers of English. The course will provide training in listening strategies using a wide variety of authentic texts and listening task types as well as an opportunity for vocabulary expansion and intense speaking practice in groups, pairs, and with the instructor. Students are expected to actively participate in class. The course will be carefully designed to maximize each student’s opportunity to achieve their goals and develop their skills.
As you can see in the schedule section, each week has been assigned a song that identifies a problem area in both listening comprehension and speaking. Each problem area will receive careful attention in its respective session but will be reflected on during other sessions, too, as these problem areas cannot be handled in isolation from other aspects of the complex skills of speaking and listening. Throughout the course, students will be required to create podcast episodes that will replicate EYE speaking tasks. Another requirement will be the writing of a listening journal based on material provided by the instructor.
